Mercedes Schlapp doesn't have an easy gig as the White House strategic communications adviser. It's not an easy task for Mercedes Schlapp as the advisor to strategic communications for the White House. However, throughout it all Schlapp has stayed determined to focus on her task at hand, working closely with White House's policy and legislative affairs teams and policy shops, as well with the larger communications team to coordinate policy rollouts. So far, her primary focus has been on topics such as school safety, the opioid epidemic, infrastructure, trade, as well as other topics. In her current job the director is not in contact with many reporters. It was in March that she received a flurry of interest when it was public that her name was going to be a potential candidate to take over Hope Hicks's position as director of communications. Mercedes Schlapp has a tough job as White House's strategist for communications. She has to deal with the president, who acts as his own communications director, multiple legal battles which could disrupt the administration's messaging strategy and a number of Cabinet secretaries who are caught in controversies of their own. Schlapp is, however, maintained her focus on her role. She is in close contact with White House political affairs and committees on legislation along with policy shops and the wider communications team to coordinate the policy roll-out. The main areas of her agenda has focused on issues like trade, school safety as well as opioids. Schlapp's current job doesn't involve much contact with reporters. In March, she received a flurry of media attention when it became it was reported that she would be the next candidate to replace Hope Hicks's position as the director of communications. The fight has been bitter. Allies to Schlapp as well as Tony Sayegh who is another candidate for the position have been fighting over the media. Schlapp confronted Sayegh following that the Washington Examiner printed a bad report about the former president.
